As a student in NYC, I had two female roommates who like myself had early morning classes on occasion. Those few days in the week would be a race to who gets into the bathroom to shower first and then who makes it second. Of course the we wanted to stay in bed for as long as possible and make it into the shower without becoming late. The iShare was a fun concept that I was exploring for my physical computing course at Parsons in Spring 2011.

Brief

"iShare" attempts to externally monitor occupation of private/shared spaces, such as a shared bathroom in a co-habited space. This iPhone app/hardware combo will monitor conscious and unconscious states, to orchestrate a ubiquitously machine based environment, without any physical user intervention. Playing on the emerging generational development in computing, away from the burden of physicality and local assets, the project highlights a new, foreign method of control within our digital lives and the subsequent change in nature of the Human-Computing relationship. Consequently, these prototypes are leading us toward the ultimate in efficiency, the elimination of the interface itself, which is a key goal in this project.
In true futuristic fashion, ambient intelligent control systems and sensors would be fully integrated. Although the current prototype utilizes an app software to notify the occupant of demand, future systems will reduce the need for a physical input by way of ubiquitous sensors throughout the environment. Such an environment invokes questions concerning the very nature of the human-computer relationship.

Technical

Utilizing an Arduino micro-controller at its core, the system is programmed to communicate to other electrical devices its statues. The hardware prototype also takes advantage of self-sustaining wireless communication to transmit the information. The app would utilize existing personal technologies to act as an input to initiate communication to the sensor hardware.

The Heirloom Group is a NYC boutique that produces smart DIY products that can be assembled at home. High-quality craft for the modern urbanite. I wanted to showcase the beautiful products with simple/clean design that does not get in the way of the product. The above images are high-fidelity design sketches. The design of the branding and logo were inspired by the 3-D technology commonly used by the company to design and produce their products. The three symbols represent the different view options available in the process of designing in the software platform. Final product images will be posted when soon.

Self initiated project of branding. While working on my logo, I decided that I wanted to express my background in an elegant way. My name is written out in parsian/farsi inside of a triangle. This original type treatment was inspired by classic persian calligraphy and modern western typeface design.

Zip Zirconia is a single player, multi-level video game programmed entirely with OpenFrameworks. I utilized particle-particle interaction with vector field to create the resistance against the particles entering the center box. The player has to push as many diamonds as possible into the red box before the time is up. In the end, score is given to the player, similar to retro arcade games. Special thanks to Zach Gage.

Burkaphilia is a series of art works that I produced in the first half of 2012 for the completion of my MFA Design and Technology degree. The complexity of the concept lead to the exploration of different mediums to best present each individual piece. As a result, I had two photographic prints, a full size sculpture, a short art film and a performance. The ipad seemed to be the best platform for me to catalog my work. Audio, video and interactive elements add to the overall experience of the series. Above are screenshots and wireframes, below is the print edition.

Burkaphilia is a series of works that use the burka as an interface to create dialogue regarding cross-cultural bias through iconography and symbolism. Constant themes in the series are popular American foods, an obsession with consumption and sexuality. Each work in the series reveals dualities of extreme practices from a culture often misunderstood by the common Westerner. The fetishism of the burka is a cultural erection to the sexual repression enforced by theocratic governments. It makes a strong, political appearance in contemporary society: In the West, when a woman exercises her freedom to wear the burka, and in the East, when she decides not to wear it. A garment that was the cultural dress of the Arabian nomads has become an emphatic symbol of cultural resistance to religion, by way of religion.

The series of works includes two digital prints, a short art film, a sculpture and an ipad app.

I had written and directed the film in March 2012 as part of my thesis series of works.

Directors of photography were Casey Dorobek and Solgil Oh. Male and Female roles were played by Brennan Lowery and Karola Sanchez. Special thanks to my brother, Behrooz Babazadeh and my friends Alvaro Soto and Katie McHugh.

Was team lead for Collaboration between Carnegie Fabrics and Parsons. The final installation was realized at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair 2012.

In January of 2012, the design team if Carnegie Fabrics joined forces with a team of students form Parsons, the New School for Design. The goal was to design a temporary environment to draw attention to the innovative processes and techniques available with the brands popular product, Xorel. The final product would then be showcased at the 2012 International Contemporary Furniture Fair.

The group of students were sectioned off into three experimental directions of Fold, Weave and Fill. My group, the Fold team, was chosen as the winning direction with the origami technique of creating a volumetric shape with a basic square sheet of the material. When many pieces are joined, the shape takes on a new form and allows for manipulation for the final shape of a cloud-like form. "It’s very poetic and a simple building block,” said Granger Moorhead (Instructor).

The project received press in publications such as the Architects Newspaper, HGTV and Metropolis Mag.

When everyday objects are embedded with technology, they become “smarter” and capable of sensing and responding to their environments. These objects start to feel alive. But can objects really come to life? Can they actually die?
Zombie-Comp’s are objects that are neither alive or fully dead. They are zombies. They are from a world of “smart” objects that talk to each other and have lives of their own.

Video and Photography shot and directed for Zombie-Comp by Kellyn Loehr.

Russian Dolls

<img src="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/86582/2278959/storyboard_Behnaz_Russian.jpg" width="670" height="257" width_o="1024" height_o="393" src_o="http://payload.cargocollective.com/1/2/86582/2278959/storyboard_Behnaz_Russian_o.jpg" data-mid="11431577" border="0" align="left"/>
A motion graphics animation using words from the book Migritude: Shilling Love by Shailja Patel. My Mother / Arms Her Daughters stood out as a point of inspiration for this short animated motion graphic piece. The concept of russian dolls nestled in one another has always struck me. I am my mothers daughter, as she is her mothers daughter, a metaphor of infinite procreation. The final image of the dolls, armed and in phalanx, reminds me a lot like the new Afghan (women) army. Graphic illustration, motion interpolation and speed were key elements taken into consideration while making this animation.

Joe in Wonderland

Greatly inspired by the story of Alice in Wonderland. With this project I wanted to create a surreal environment while trying to maintain visual depth, color and perspective. I shot the green screen footage with a friend and did all of the post, keying/coloring/editing in After Effects. Music by YAZZDA. Special thanks for Ben Winter for the great acting.

Amplification of Energy collaborative project that explores the potential of alternative energy solutions for fashionable wearables. The research explores localized and renewable energy source derived from and around the body. The manifestation of such research is smart garments that focus on the harvesting of radio frequency (RF) energy. In the context of the installation we use ferrofluid to symbolize the use of oil as a non-renewable energy source, and animate the garments to represent the clean future. Using custom electronics, shape memory alloys, smart fabrics, and linear actuators, we explore the newly found freedom that will occur with localized and renewable energy sources.
